Bringing a new pet into your life is a big responsibility and a lifetime commitment, you will need to cover the expenses of food, toys/treats, vet bills etc. Please plan ahead of time before adopting an animal. They are not meant to be kept for a few years and then gotten rid of once they are older. They are a member of the family.

Some things to consider before bringing a new dog into your life:
*Have the essentials on hand including food and water bowls, safe chew toys, grooming tools, a collar and leash, an identification tag and a crate with bedding (towels will do if you don’t want to spend money on a fancy crate pad).
*If you already have a dog in your home, you will want to let your dog meet your potential new pet in a neutral place. Never just bring the new animal straight into your home as they may upset your current dog. This could lead to aggression and territorial aggression. If the dogs are meeting in a place that they do not own they will be a lot less likely to show aggression. If you can please bring your current dog with you to the shelter to see if they get along before commiting to adoption.
*Who will walk the dog at various times of times of day? Who will feed the dog, and at what times? Who will take the dog to the vet? Be sure to divy up the responsibilities between family members so everyone can take part in raising your new family member. And if it’s you who winds up walking her in the middle of a rainy night, slap on a smile and remember—pet parenting is a privilege, not a chore!
*Dogs can get confused when one human says “down” and another says “off” when, for example, they jump on visitors. Then there’s “down” versus “lie down,” and “paw” versus “shake”—surely you see how this is perplexing to another species! Do the dog a favor and select the terms that you plan to associate with various commands.
*If you don’t already have one, find a good veterinarian—and bring your new canine to a caring veterinarian for a wellness exam within one week after adoption. Make this appointment even before you bring home your new pup.
*This one’s for folks who already have a dog in the home. Before you introduce the new hound into the pack, pick up anything your resident dog might guard, such as food bowls, bones, toys and beds. Even if your dog has never exhibited possessive tendencies, it is best to exercise caution. This may be an intense experience for your resident canine, so do be patient with him/her.

Adoptions of PitBulls, Pitbull mixes, American Bulldogs, & American Staffordshire Terriers require home visits before and after adoption. A fenced yard is also necessary. There are no exceptions.
We only let these dogs go to wonderful loving homes where they will be treated as a member of the family.
GRAMPS
Don’t be fooled by Gramps graying face. Although he’s recently found himself without a home, Gramps always has a waggy tail and a smile on his face. Black Lab mix, Gramps has everything going for him. He is not a barker. He is housebroken, walks well on a leash, is patient and kind and loves other dogs. When Gramps comes into the kennel, he must stop at all the other cages to say “Hello” to the other dogs. Even the frightened “boarders” stop to talk to Gramps and wag their tails too!
JULIO aka SHAKER
An unclaimed stray, known as Shaker, he was nicknamed Julio and it has stuck. Julio was found on Route 96 back in April 2009. A happy and charming Shepherd mix with bedroom brown eyes, who likes back, shoulder and under the ear rubs; Julio is thought to be 3-4 years old and weighs around 50 pounds. If you really want to win himover, like any man, try going through his stomach - bring him a treat or two and soon you’ll be his new best friend! He loves to play fetch and loves any toy that squeaks. In his heart, Julio is a sweetheart who loves the people he knows. He enjoys car rides almost as much as his chest rubs and treats. He gets along wonderfully with other female dogs. He knows the sit command, and would also do great on a farm to keep him busy. Julio is up to date on his vaccinations, neutered and eagerly waiting for a loving forever home.
FRED & GINGER
5 to 6 year old Bichon Frise purebreds (without papers) released from a breeding facility. Fred and Ginger arrived at the shelter in July 2009 and are still waiting for a home of their own! Although the breed may be known as sociable people lovers, these two poor pups spent too much time as commodities and have been getting rehabilitated. They are are much more social now and enjoy attention. Creamy white and weighing all of 10 pounds, Fred and Ginger need to be part of a caring family with possibly, a well-balanced companion dog. Can you foster one or both of these two? They are neutered/spayed, and up to date on their vaccinations.
UPDATE 2/21/10- Fred and Ginger have each found foster homes!
SHELBY
7 year old Shelby found herself at BAS in December 2009 when the elderly man she lived with had to go to a nursing home. A bit on the chunky side, 60 pound Shelby is a talkative lady who expresses her wishes. She is a smart girl who knows sit and shake. She would do better in a quiet home with human companionship. She is an absolute sweetheart who loves to be pet. Shelby is up to date on her vaccinations and spayed.

CHEWY
Every Star Wars fan will recognize this fellow. Two-year-old Chewy may not “speak” like Chewbacca, but with the body and black and tan coloring of a German Shepherd and the hair of an Afghan Hound, there is no more appropriate name for him. Chewy’s heartbroken owner must move out of state and cannot take this charming boy with him. Fifty-five pound Chewy is another perfect treasure. A definite inside dog, he is housebroken, walks well on a leash and gets along with all. Chewy, who does NOT chew, is already neutered and up to date on his vaccinations. He’s simply waiting to go home with you!

BUTCH
Butch is a 2 year old American Staffordshire Terrier. He was surrendered to the shelter by his owner who could no longer care for him. He is a smart boy who walks well on a leash and knows the sit command and is not much of a barker. He will be neutered prior to adoption. Due to his breed, Butch requires a home visit before and after adoption to ensure he is getting the best possible home. A fenced yard is also recommended
GOOBER
What happens when you cross a Black Lab with a Bassett Hound? You get Goober!!! Two to three year old Goober looks exactly like a Black Lab with Bassett Hound legs. Another unclaimed stray, this time from the town of Covert, Goober is a sweet love of a boy. He gets along with other dogs and cats and shows sign of being housebroken. He enjoys chasing laser lights all over the floor as well! Weighing in at a chubby 40 pounds, Goober is up to date on his vaccinations, neutered, and ready to go home with you!
SLY
Sly is the sweetest pit bull you will meet! She was found as a stray and never reclaimed. Sly gets along well with other animals and loves people. She loves to go for long walks, give you kisses, and be the center of attention. Sly requires a home visit before and after adoption to ensure she is getting the best possible home due to her breed. A fenced yard is recommended and she would even benefit from obedience classes (offered at PetCo!) A home without children under the age of 14 is recommended. She is not yet spayed but will be before adoption. Stop by and visit her, you will be so glad you did!
BO PEEP
An unclaimed stray from Tyre, who has “lost her sheep”, 40 to 45 pound Bo Peep is a friendly but shy American Fox Hound mix. Estimated to be 3 to 4 years old, this lady needs her exercise and is looking to be a family or other dog companion. Sweet Bo Peep gets along with all. She is up to date on her vaccinations and will be spayed before adoption.
